The Art of Bob Dixon
I originally got my start in art by taking a basic art studio core course in college. At the time I was a psychology major with a heavy background in science and technology and art was not a direction I would have predicted as my future. Six months after completing that course I was enrolled in a different school as an art major and completed my bachelors degree in sculpture, metalworking and ceramics. After school, I set up my own jewelry studio and wood shop and began making custom jewelry designs and stringed musical instruments. These activities comprised the bulk of my artistic endeavors until I moved to Tennessee. In the early eighties I became involved in medieval re-enactment and found a home for my metal working skills. Armoring became my new avenue of self- expression.

In the early 90’s my wife, Mary, became involved with the Giles Heritage Theater as it’s resident artist and I became an un-official prop maker and theatrical photographer. In 1995, Mary started TechnoGraphics, a photo restoration business and I began working with computers in an artistic context. We purchased our first Macintosh computer, Photoshop and a bundle pack of software that included Poser 1, Bryce 1 and Ray Dream 1. These tools, along with a few newer additions, have become the basis of my current work and I use them daily. Traditionally trained as a sculptor, I think in 3 dimensions and this, coupled with my engineering skills, has allowed me to use the computer as a means of creating three-dimensional worlds that are an extension of my mind and emotions.

My photography tends to center around the beauty of the natural world and deals mostly with light, color and form. My computer generated images come from the virtual universe that is inside my mind. Some are realistic, some are what I like to call hyper-realistic or hyper-surrealistic and some are completely off the wall. The artwork on display on this site is representative of many of my current directions of expression. I tend to go with the flow and let the artwork create itself. Sometimes I have a definite direction for a piece but most of the time I start with a digital sketch (playing with the software until something cool develops) and then I let my feelings and intuition take over until it is done. At any given time I have about fifty projects in various stages of completion, most will be completed, but many will not because of either improvements in technology or my ability to use it.
